In the fall of 2015 I saw a Face Book friend post that she was planning to attend The Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop in Dayton, Ohio. This workshop sells out in a matter of hours. Now I had never written anything that was not of a legal nature, but for reasons I will never fully comprehend, I immediately logged on and received one of the coveted spots.
The following March I flew from SEATAC to ORD to DAY and my life was altered. I was altered. The hotel was full of funny, fun, friendly, talkative writers and I fell in love with this dream to become one of them. I met up with my Face Book friend, Barb, whom I had not seen since I dated her brother in college. I met Gina Barreca from University of Connecticut and she was the warmest, most giving person I had met in a long time. She adopted me into her loud, smart woman club and gave me the feather mask I’m wearing in the photo. (I’m also holding her latest humor book. Buy it, it’s hilarious!) I met other writers, some published, some not all willing to be open, vulnerable and eager to share their story.
I’ve been to tons of conferences as a lawyer and never have they been full of funny, fun, friendly people. Some are talkative, but that is because their egos often run their mouths.
I came to Dayton feeling slightly like a fraud for even being there, but I left with altered DNA. My writing journey had begun.
